The massive Saturday slates in college basketball continue with 146 games in action today. TCU and Iowa State both come into this one firing on all cylinders in conference play.
For TCU, their offense has certainly struggled at times and they go up against an Iowa State team that should be able to limit transition baskets and the attack of Mike Miles a bit. Where they may fall short is being able to defend at all levels. The absence of the Cyclones’ starting center in Kunc will hurt Iowa State more as time goes on and especially in a matchup such as this. Their defense and rebounding around the rim will suffer. With the big bodies on the Horned Frogs side such as Lampkin, I expect plenty of 2nd chance opportunities for TCU. With a defense as stout as Iowa State, this could be the difference in the game. TCU should also be able to get to the FT line plenty vs an Iowa State defense that fouls quite a bit as the Horned Frogs should have the homecourt whistle and rank 62nd in FTR. Lastly, the TCU offense is due for major positive regression on the offensive side. Yes, they are facing tougher competition now but they have also been riddled with injuries until the past 5 or so games. This offense will only get better and more cohesive as time goes on.
For Iowa State, I worry where their offense comes from. They are poor to start and are facing a defense that ranks top 20 in the nation. The Cyclones do not play the same away from home aka Hilton Magic, usually, and I think that could bear itself out today. Iowa State will need to be active on the offensive glass to stay in this one, which they have done well without Kunc out there. The Horned Frogs also force plenty of TOs and Iowa State struggles in that aspect. This will lead to plenty of transition buckets for TCU. There are just not many avenues in terms of finding a consistent offense and this has been evident over two seasons under Otzelberger.
TCU is being valued at the same # as they were last week vs a better team in Texas Tech. This number feels a bit short so I will side with TCU -6.
