Feel good story for Kraken Goalie – Kraken fans hoping it continues
In perhaps one of the best feel-good stories to come out of the NHL so far this season, the 7th round pick in the 2015 NHL draft, Joey Daccord has taken full advantage of his playing time with Seattle. The 27 year old netminder has turned heads throughout the NHL, racking up high save performances and and even 2 shutouts. So who is Joey Daccord?
Joel Daccord who goes by Joey, played for Arizona State and was chosen by the Ottawa Senators in the 2015 NHL draft. He was born in North Andover, MA in August of 1996. After signing with the Senators and taking advantage of his first call up, posting a 33 save win on March 14, 2021, he unfortunately injured his leg on March 18th, 2021 and would miss the remainder of the season. Then came the Kraken. The Senators left Daccord unprotected in the expansion draft which saw the Seattle Kraken join the NHL. Seattle plucked the Swiss-American from Ottawa and he ended up playing 5 games for the Kraken in the 2021-2022 campaign.
On December 9th, 2023, Kraken netminder Philipp Grubauer was injured. The following day, he was placed on injured reserve. With the starting goalie out with injury, backup Joey Daccord was called upon to bear the bulk of the load for the Seattle Kraken. In his first appearance as the starting net-minder, Joey Daccord saved 23 of 25 shots from the Minnesota Wild. A promising performance for worried Kraken fans. After suffering the 3-0 loss to the Wild, Daccord really started to settle in.

The following game, Daccord shut out the superbly talented Florida Panthers, stopping all 24 shots. Building on his fantastic showing against Florida, Daccord then allowed only 1 goal against the Chicago Blackhawks in a 7-1 win. From when Daccord took over as starter to present day, the 7th round pick has boasted 10 games in which he has stopped at least 30 shots. He has recorded 14 games in which he has let up 2 goals or less. Daccord currently holds a 14-8-9 record. He is top 10 in GA/G and SV%. Daccord is holding onto 4th place with 2.37 goals allowed per game and 6th place with a .920 SV%. Obviously these numbers can be skewed since he only took over as starter in December. But regardless, Joey Daccord has been keeping the Kraken afloat in a very tough Pacific Division.
The Seattle Kraken sit at 5th place in the Pacific, 7 points out of 3rd. After a 9 game winning streak, the Kraken lost 5 of their last 6 which can be a death sentence when your division competition is LA, Edmonton, Vegas and Vancouver. However, with the Kings reeling as of late, the Kraken still have a shot at the wild card. Even with Grubauer now healthy, it’s hard for Seattle to justify plugging him back into the number 1 role. Even so, with two good net-minders Daccord in Grubauer, Maybe the Kraken can get it going again and overtake the LA Kings in the standings.
