Christian Pulisic – A Generational Type Footballing Talent – Moves to Serie A (AC Milan)
If you’ve watched the United States Men’s National team over the past several years, you know how special Christian Pulisic can be. He’s a great leader, a perfect teammate, and when he’s at his best, an absolutely phenomenal talent too. The kid from Hershey has the ability to do great things, as he did in the World Cup while playing a key role in navigating the USMNT through a challenging group, but unlike his country, who consistently ask him to be the main man, he’s been stuck in the shadows with his club in recent years.
Pulisic is far from the only victim of the dysfunction of Chelsea over the past couple of years, but it’s been particularly frustrating to see as an American fan. So many of us were thrilled when the news broke that our country’s biggest footballing star would be making a move to the World’s biggest league, and his nine goal four assist debut season in the Premier League at the age of 20 had us all dreaming big.
He had his moments, like the first goal of the UCL semifinal against Madrid en route to Chelsea’s triumph in 2021, and bizarrely enough, he scored the goal that sunk Man City and locked up Liverpool’s long-awaited Premier League title.
But with all of the managerial changes, he never found a consistent role with the squad; it was time to go. Enter AC Milan, who have done some outstanding business over the last few years. After Chlesea bought him from Dortmund for a fee of 64 million Euros, Milan were able to secure his services from the Blues for just 20 million pounds.
It’s a great example of buying low, and investing in a talent that hasn’t been allowed to show itself on a regular basis. Dare I say, the move had shades of Mo Salah, who came to Chelsea without a clear role defined, moved to Italy in a more modest deal, and flourished there before coming back to be the greatest winger in Premier League history.
The coveted Number 11 for Christian Pulisic at Milan
The hype was enormous; the pairing between the biggest American name in the sport and one of Europe’s most iconic teams is a match made in marketing heaven, and every photo of Pulisic holding or wearing anything red and black sent shockwaves through football media on this side of the Atlantic. He was even given the #11 shirt, a sign of his importance in Milan’s project. There was only one question left: how things would work out on the pitch?
With existing Goal Threats at AC Milan – Goals are sure to rack up with Pulisic Pulling Strings
That question can only be answered with one word- beautifully. In his Serie A debut at Bologna, Pulisic played a beautiful ball in to open up Milan’s first goal of the season, and just 21 minutes into the contest, fired in an absolutely breathtaking first goal in the league. After securing man of the match honors in his first-ever Serie A contest, he came close again in his second, scoring another goal, this one his first at the San Siro in front of a delighted Milan crowd.
In addition to the commercial potential of the move, it made tremendous footballing sense; Milan needed a force on the right wing across from Rafael Leão. With Olivier Giroud between the two, Milan’s attacking trio has looked absolutely phenomenal through the first two games of their Serie A slate. The team has racked up six goals, two from Pulisic, three from Giroud (including a pair of penalties) and one from superstar fullback Theo Hernández.
Still, Let’s give it some time – Pulisic is yet to even settle in – despite staggering potential at Milan
Of course, it’s easy to get swept up in the hype-hell, it only took him 21 minutes to make American history- but we’re only two games into the season. Things are looking up, but there’s a long way to go, and it’s not like Bologna and Torino are top Italian teams. The next two matches in the league will be quite telling; a road match at José Mourinho’s Roma on Friday, and a derby clash with Inter on September 16th. These are the toughest tests yet, providing us with truly thrilling opportunities to watch “The LeBron James of Soccer” represent both his club and all of us Americans rooting for him as he continues to shine brightest in the biggest spots.
